{LIMITED} PDF : BrainWorks Primitive Reflex Activity Cards with Instructions!
What are primitive reflexes?
Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that develop before birth and typically integrate during the first year of life as the brain matures and as the child reaches developmental milestones. These reflexes lay the foundation for motor skills, sensory processing, and future learning skills. When primitive reflexes remain active beyond the expected age, they can interfere with a child’s coordination, attention, self-regulation, sensory processing abilities and academic performance.
Our BrainWorks Primitive Reflex Cards are designed to help therapists, educators, and parents integrate these reflexes through simple, play-based movement activities and games. Each card focuses on a specific reflex, with clear visuals, instructions and check off boxes that make it easy to incorporate into daily routines at home, in therapy sessions, or in the classroom.
Instructions for Use
1. Choose the Reflex: Select the card that matches the reflex you are targeting based on your assessment or observation. We recommend starting with one reflex at a time. To learn how to assess and integrate primitive reflexes, take this course: Integrating Primitive Reflexes: Strategies for Parents and Practitioners
2. Review the Activity: Practice the activity yourself and review the visual cues to ensure correct positioning and movement. Practice with the child to ensure proper form.
3. Incorporate into Daily Routines: Schedule the activity 1–2 times per day, ideally at the same times to build consistency. Be sure to make it fun!
4. Adjust for the Child’s Needs: Modify pace, duration, or repetitions to match the child’s ability and comfort level.
5. Monitor and Record Progress: Track changes in coordination, attention, and ease of movement over time to determine when to reduce or change activities.
